How can a story be told whose protagonist must remain anonymous? Filmmaker Jonas Poher Rasmussen creates the pseudonym Amin Nawabi, which should make it possible to reproduce the true version of an escape for the fi rst time in 20 years. Through animation and archival footage, the fi lmmaker opens up about the life of his old school friend, who now lives in Denmark. “Some things are hard to talk about,” Amin says as he begins to talk about his life in 1980s Afghanistan and his path to Europe. When the Soviet Union withdrew from the country and attacks by the mujahideen increased, Amin fl ed to Russia with his family. After years of hiding in Moscow, he seperates from his family in order to seek asylum in Denmark - disguised as an orphan. Amin tells us of violence and pain, of families torn apart and constant lying. He tells of adolescent love, of being queer in a world that provides no place for it, and of a fear that follows him into his relationships today. His story opens up a view of fl ight and rejection; of a country whose confl icts are painfully current.
