L, a university student in India, writes letters to her estranged lover, while he is away. Through these letters, we get a glimpse into the drastic changes taking place around her. Merging reality with fiction, dreams, memories, fantasies and anxieties, an amorphous narrative unfolds.
A NIGHT OF KNOWING NOTHING
Payal Kapadia - IN/FR 2021, 96 Min., OmeU

L. is a fi lm student in India. A voice reads out the letters that she wrote to her lover, K., who belongs to a different caste. Meanwhile, we see people dancing in silence against the background of fi lm classics. As L.’s story unfolds we delve into a black-and-white, 16-mm fi lmic collage of newspaper cuttings, doodles and old footage. What emerges from this intense engagement with the intimacy of L.’s relationship to K. is the overwhelming force of the political situation in contemporary India. Student protests against the Modi government, discrimination against Muslims, the increasingly elitist universities— all of it fi nds its way through the cracks of L.’s story of love and abandonment.
